German Sheppard Kaykohl Land German Shepherd Articles Exceptional European Import Bred GSDs for Exceptional American Families German Shepherds Are..... By Kaykohl Land German Shepherds are leaders and maintainers of
order. In their herding background they are the "moving fence" that
keep all of the sheep together, calm, safe, and moving in harmony.
They work independently, normally with no other dogs, and only with
the voice/signal guidance of their handler. For this reason they are
sensitive to correction and to their handlers, but need a strong and
stable handler
that they can trust.
German Shepherds often do not like strange dogs in their space/face or around their pack. Once introduced to their family/pack properly, they are normally tolerant and will get along well. We have cats, 2 companion Papillons, Show Manchester Terriers, and have turkeys on our property that the German Shepherds interact with daily with no problems. However, they are a pack orientated breed and will want to know where they fit in that pack and will try to and elevate their position if possible. German Shepherds often times do not like other animals (or young children) being rowdy. Other animals running or playing, or children running, playing, and screaming often times brings out their natural herding instincts. Your German Shepherd will want to gather up all involved and put them back into a calm flock (which normally involves chasing and nipping). Remember, German Shepherds are the keepers of order. If their herd of sheep were to get rowdy, it is likely one would become injured or even die. It is ingrained in a German Shepherd to keep his "family" calm. I was raised with German Shepherds, have raised my children with German Shepherds, and frequently have children over with our dogs. But they know as a rule if they are going to "rough house" or be loud and obnoxious that they need to do it away from the dogs. Because dogs are dogs and all they have are their instincts. When all is calm, and normal every day life is going on, our dogs are always underfoot. While babysitting a 3 year old years ago, all went a little "too quiet" and the 3 year old and our SchH3 male stud dog at the time had disappeared. I found them in my daughter's room with the 3 year old trying to see how many crayons she could fit into our male's ear. A correct German Shepherd is very tolerant, kind, and loving towards well behaved children. A German Shepherd likes to be with their family and need daily interaction and stimulation. They do not do well when thrown out in a yard or kennel and have DAYS of no interaction. Since they are very intelligent, if they are neglected, they find things to do to entertain themselves (i.e. dig up the flower bed, nuisance bark, chew the siding off the house, run in circles, etc.). They need a dedicated owner who will make them an active and loved member of their family, without treating them like a spoiled child. German Shepherds DO NOT in general do well when they are tethered or tied out. It will almost always cause problems with training, cause severe dominance issues, and a lot of tension. If you cannot watch your German Shepherd, put him in a safe fenced area or in his crate. GSDs are VERY smart animals and will learn that they can manipulate and control the tether. Then when you place them on a leash and expect them to listen, you will only make them challenge and try to win with you as well. Being tied up also creates a constant tension around their neck regardless if the rope is tight or not. It will put your German Shepherd in a very stressed mental state and can even create orthopedic problems. German Shepherds are very soulful and almost human like in intelligence and must be treated and trained justly and with positive methods. They need a strong and stable owner who is firm yet fair. Compulsion and corrective training may get quick results at first, but will cause tension, aggression, and unwillingness and almost always will result in an unhappy and/or fearful dog. Ceasar Millan ( The Dog Whisperer ) uses the same methods of training we have for the past 12+ years. His books are excellent and normally work great for the breed (http://www.cesarmillaninc.com/).
